Preparing for a legal consultation concerning Türkiye

A practical preparation guide for people living outside Türkiye. Güzel Hukuk is based in Çorlu, Tekirdağ. This guide does not imply that the firm has offices abroad or offers representation in every jurisdiction.

1. Identify the matter and its stage

Write down the general subject, the institutions involved and whether a proceeding is already pending. Separate the date of an event from the date on which a document was received. A foreign address does not by itself determine jurisdiction, applicable law or the time available to act. An urgent court or enforcement document needs individual examination; the appointment form does not suspend a legal period.

2. Prepare a document inventory

List the documents you hold without uploading their contents in the initial enquiry. For a foreign judgment, note the issuing country, court, decision date and whether evidence of finality is available. For inheritance or property matters, identify the kind of record available rather than sending identity numbers. Keep original documents and envelopes. Translation, certification and apostille requirements depend on the document, country, treaty and intended use.

3. Plan representation separately

A consultation and the acceptance of a legal instruction are separate steps. Before arranging a power of attorney, ask which authority and special powers the intended transaction requires. Turkish consular notarial services and foreign notarisation are different routes; neither should be assumed suitable for every matter. Confirm the current procedure directly with the competent consulate or institution. An ordinary video meeting does not itself create a notarised power of attorney.

4. Arrange the meeting clearly

The website lists office, telephone and online meeting options. Confirm the selected method, the time zone, participant identity checks and any interpretation needs before the meeting. The publication of this English guide is not a statement that a lawyer provides services in English. Ask the office about communication arrangements. Fees, scope, possible conflicts of interest and the acceptance of the matter must be clarified separately.

5. Protect information and keep a record

Use the first enquiry for the general subject and preferred contact channel. Arrange a suitable method with the office before sharing medical records, criminal case documents or other sensitive material. Do not post passwords, identity documents or private case details in the public information assistant. Record the questions you want answered and the documents requested after the meeting. A website calculation is not a court assessment or individual legal advice.
